WHERE TO GO IN SAN JOSÉ DE GRACIA:

SAN JOSE DE GRACIA MAGIC TOWN AGUASCALIENTES MEXICO

Founded more than four centuries ago by the Chichimeca inhabitants from the outskirts of Tepatitlán, Jalisco, who were fleeing the invasions of the kingdom of Michoacan by the Spaniards, San José de Gracia emerged as a small community made up of sixteen families that subsisted on the hunting, fishing, cutting and wood working, led by the Indian Juan Domínguez.

The old town that prospered to the step of two centuries was named like San Joseph in honor of the son of the king Fernando VII, in 1862. Before it, in the War of Independence the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla arrived at this earth after having been defeated at the Puente de Calderón, on January 19, 1811. San José de Gracia served him as a kind refuge for five days, after which he lost his command as leader of the Insurgent movement.

San José de Gracia is one of the few municipalities in the country that during the Viceroyalty had the Republic of the Indians, and therefore it is a land with a very special syncretic culture in terms of the mixture of indigenous and Catholic beliefs. Proof of this is the existence of the Cult of the Original Lord, which has been proposed as Intangible Heritage of the town, the dances of the Pluma and the Matachines, the pilgrimages of Christs and the representation of the oldest living Stations of the State.

At the base there is a plaque that invites reflection on not forgetting the weakest and most oppressed.
