Baja California Sur is a state on the Baja California Peninsula in northwest Mexico. 

The state capital, La Paz, has the Whale Museum and a promenade overlooking the Gulf of California. 

Nearby Espíritu Santo Island has dive sites and beaches. South are the twin resorts of Los Cabos: Cabo San Lucas is known for its beaches, nightlife and El Arco rock arch while San José del Cabo city has colorful colonial architecture.

Nearby San José del Cabo Estuary nature reserve shelters birdlife including Belding’s yellowthroats and least terns. 
 
North along the coast is Cabo Pulmo National Park, with coral reefs rich in marine life. 
 
On the Pacific coast, Todos Santos offers art galleries and surf beaches like Los Cerritos. 
 
Back on the Gulf coast to the north, the town of Loreto is known for its mission architecture. 
 
The Bahía de Loreto National Park is home to dolphins and sea lions. 
 
Farther northwest is El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, with lagoons inhabited by gray and blue whales, marine turtles and seals.

MAIN CITIES

Cabo San Lucas, a resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, is known for its beaches, water-based activities and nightlife. 

Playa El Médano is Cabo’s main beach, with outdoor restaurants and numerous bars. Past the marina is Land’s End promontory, site of Playa del Amor (Lover’s Beach) and El Arco, a natural archway in the seacliffs.

La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, a Mexican state on the Baja California Peninsula. It’s known for its seafront Malecón promenade with beaches, parks and art by Mexican and international artists. 

Many bars and restaurants overlook the water. In the city center, the 19th-century Nuestra Señora de La Paz Cathedral dominates the shady Velasco Garden.
