GET TO KNOW THE STATE OF CAMPECHE MEXICO

Campeche, a Mexican state on the Yucatán Peninsula, spans limestone hills, rainforests and Gulf of Mexico beaches.

Its namesake capital is a colonial-era harbor city with baroque Spanish architecture, cobblestone streets and a walled historic district.

Its preserved fortifications include Fuerte de San Miguel, housing Campeche Archaeological Museum displaying finds from Mayan sites including Edzná and Isla de Jaina.

East of Campeche city, the remains of ancient Mayan towns stand along the Chenes Route. 

To the south is Calakmul, an archaeological site with towering Mayan temples set in protected rainforest. 

In the gulf to the west is the Isla del Carmen, stretching across the Términos Lagoon, a nature reserve sheltering sea turtles, dolphins, crocodiles and many species of fish. 

This slender island is also home to Ciudad del Carmen, a city featuring colorful colonial buildings, seafood restaurants and beaches. 

Back on the mainland, popular beaches include Playa Bonita and Seybaplaya.

Campeche is a Mexican port city on the Gulf of Mexico.

It’s known for its preserved baroque colonial buildings, military architecture and walled historic district.

In response to pirate attacks, the city was fortified in the 17th century and 2 hilltop fortresses are now museums.

Fort de San Miguel holds the Campeche Archaeological Museum, with artifacts from local Mayan sites like Edzná, Calakmul and Isla Jaina.

Ciudad del Carmen is a city in southeast Mexico. 

It sits on Isla del Carmen, between the Gulf of Mexico and Laguna de Términos, a protected natural area with dolphins and turtles. 

The city is known for its colonial buildings, seafood and beaches, like Playa Norte. The Museo Victoriano Nieves showcases local history and pre-Hispanic artifacts. 

The Puente Zacatal bridge links the city with the mainland.

Campeche, officially called the Free and Sovereign State of Campeche, is one of the thirty-one states that, together with Mexico City, form the United Mexican States. 

Its capital and most populated city is San Francisco de Campeche. It is located in the Yucatan peninsula, southeast region of the country, bordering Yucatan to the north and northeast, Quintana Roo to the east, Belize to the southeast, Guatemala to the south, the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and Tabasco to the southwest .
