Guanajuato is a central Mexican state known as the birthplace of the country鈥檚 independence. Its namesake capital is home to the Alh贸ndiga de Granaditas granary, where the first battle with 19th-century Spain was fought.聽

The former mining town is also famous for its hilly, cobbled alleys lined with colonial architecture and picturesque garden plazas聽like the Jard铆n de La Uni贸n.

The capital hosts performances during the Cervantino arts festival at theaters like Teatro Ju谩rez and Teatro Principal.聽

The nearby Museo Estudio Diego Rivera, former home and studio to the eponymous muralist, exhibits his paintings.聽

The Museo de las Momias displays the Mummies of Guanajuato preserved by mineral-rich soil.聽

Neighboring cities include Le贸n, a leather goods center, and Dolores Hidalgo, where Miguel Hidalgo rallied for Mexico鈥檚 independence at the town church.聽

To the south, San Miguel de Allende has an artistic vibe. Its chic boutiques and B&Bs are housed in colonial buildings on cobblestoned lanes.

Guanajuato is a city in central Mexico. It’s known for its silver mining history and colonial architecture.聽

Its network of narrow streets, alleyways and tunnels is typified by the Callej贸n del Beso (Alley of the Kiss), so named because the balconies are close enough for a couple to reach across and kiss.聽

In a former granary, the Alh贸ndiga de Granaditas聽is an art and local history museum with pre-Columbian exhibits.

San Miguel de Allende, a colonial-era city in Mexico鈥檚 central highlands, is known for its baroque Spanish architecture, thriving arts scene and cultural festivals.聽

In the city鈥檚 historic, cobblestoned center lies the neo-Gothic church Parroquia de San Miguel Arc谩ngel, whose dramatic pink towers rise above the main plaza, El Jard铆n. The Templo de San聽Francisco church nearby has an 18th-century churrigueresque facade.
