GET TO KNOW THE STATE OF OAXACA MEXICO

Oaxaca is a state in southern Mexico known for its indigenous cultures.

Its capital city of the same name is noted for colonial buildings often made of green volcanic stone.

In the main square, El Zócalo, stands the baroque Catedral de Oaxaca. Beyond the city, pre-Columbian archaeological sites include Mitla, Yagul and Monte Albán, the Zapotec capital dating to around 500 B.C.

Other major sites in Oaxaca City include Santo Domingo Church and the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca.

In the west, the mountainous Mixteca region is popular for hiking and biking, as is the remote village group known as the Pueblos Mancomunados.

The Pacific coast is home to Huatulco, a fishing village turned resort; Puerto Escondido, known for surfing; and laid-back Playa Zipolite and Mazunte.

The region is also known for food specialties such as mole negro, a spicy chocolate-based sauce, hot chocolate and chapulines (grasshoppers); and traditional crafts including pottery and weaving.
