Puebla is a state in the highlands of south-central Mexico.

Its capital, also called Puebla, is known as the birthplace of the chocolate-based mole poblano sauce, a specialty of the region.

Puebla’s historic center is notable for its Spanish colonial architecture, including the grand Puebla Cathedral.

On the city’s western outskirts is the town of Cholula, known for its Great Pyramid, one of the world’s largest.

Atop Cholula’s Great Pyramid, the ochre-colored Nuestra SeĂąora de los Remedios Church offers views of 2 volcanoes.

In the TehuacĂĄn-CuicatlĂĄn Biosphere Reserve, in the state’s south, ZapotitlĂĄn Salinas’ botanical garden shelters over 50 species of cacti.

In the north, ZacatlĂĄn has traditions of apple growing and watchmaking, which can be experienced in orchards and a clock museum, respectively.

Colonial-era Cuetzalan del Progreso and its surrounding villages sit among hilly forests with waterfalls and caves. The painted Talavera tiles that adorn hundreds of Puebla’s buildings are locally produced and on sale in numerous shops.
