GET TO KNOW THE STATE OF VERACRUZ MEXICO

Veracruz, an elongated Mexican state bordering the Gulf of Mexico, is home to numerous beaches as well as the country’s highest peak, Pico de Orizaba, a dormant volcano.

The modern port city of Veracruz was founded by Hernán Cortés in 1519 as a base for Spain’s conquest of the Aztec Empire.

Today the city is famous for its exuberant annual Carnival festival.

Overlooking Veracruz’s harbor, San Juan de Ulúa is a large fort-turned-museum.

Xalapa, the state capital, has the Museo de Antropología, whose collection notably includes massive stone heads carved by the region’s ancient Olmec civilization.

To the north is El Tajín, an archaeological site featuring many pre-Columbian ball courts and the Pyramid of the Niches.

Another major archaeological area to the southeast is San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán, once an Olmec city.

Besides swimming and snorkeling in the Gulf, outdoor activities include hiking and mountain climbing as well as white-water rafting in rivers such as the Río Pescados.
