Yucatán, the Mexican state, is known for its Gulf of Mexico beaches and Mayan ruins.

Yucatán’s capital and largest city, Mérida, has a Spanish colonial history reflected in buildings such as 16th-century Mérida Cathedral.

Outside of the capital, quaint Izamal features Mayan ruins and the massive 16th-century Franciscan Convent of San Antonio de Padua.

Coastal Progreso offers beaches and kitesurfing. A number of underground sinkholes (cenotes) can be explored near colonial Valladolid.

Large flocks of flamingos are found at the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve and Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve.
