Zacatecas is a state in north-central Mexico, northwest of Mexico City.

It contains La Quemada archaeological site, a large pre-Columbian settlement with a museum, hilltop pyramid and columns.

The state’s high-altitude capital, also called Zacatecas, is home to the Mina El Edén, an old silver mine with an underground train that passes unique rock formations, displays of mineral deposits and antique mining machinery.

A cable-car ride up Cerro de la Bufa, a hill in the north of the capital, offers panoramic views and leads to the colonial Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio church.

In the town below are the baroque Catedral de Zacatecas and the Palacio de Gobierno Estatal, accented by pink stone and ornamental iron.

The nearby Museo Pedro Coronel exhibits artifacts and paintings from across the globe, while the Museo Rafael Coronel houses a collection of masks.

By the state’s western border, the mining town of Sombrerete sits on the edge of the Sierra de Órganos National Park, home to towering, wind-carved rock formations.
